Factory QC In China What To Check Before Production Starts

Most quality issues are preventable. Most buyers inspect at the wrong stage, or not at all until it is too late to do anything but accept the batch.

The Three Checkpoints And Why Most Buyers Skip The Second

During Production Is The Underused One

The most common inspection is the final random inspection before shipment. The problem is arithmetic: by the time the factory calls you for final inspection, 100% of the goods are already made. If 30% are defective, the factory chooses between expensive rework and pushing you to accept an AQL 2.5 pass. It is not hard to guess which.

Schedule the during-production inspection when 15–20% of production is complete. At that point corrections are still cheap, the line is still running so adjustments are immediate, and you are sampling the actual production run rather than the pre-production sample the factory spent three days polishing.

The Inline Check Nobody Books

For high-volume repetitive manufacturing — garments, hardware, packaging — a mid-production check at 50–60% completion is invaluable. It catches consistency drift, where the first batch was excellent and the later ones were not. Final inspection samples randomly across a finished batch and frequently misses a drift that started halfway through.

Final Random Inspection Is The Gate, Not The Plan

The standard AQL 2.5 or 1.0 check before loading is the last gate. Treat it as a pass or fail decision, not a negotiation. If it fails, reject. Accepting a batch on a promise to fix it next time trains the factory that the gate is soft.

Start Before The Line Starts

Raw material inspection is where the cheapest wins are. Suppliers under price pressure swap in cheaper-grade steel, thinner fabric or off-spec plastic pellets to shave around 3% off cost. Checking materials upfront catches the problem before it multiplies across 10,000 units.

Every stage should produce photo and video reports. When a claim surfaces months later, documentation is the difference between a conversation and an argument.

Questions On This Topic

When should during-production inspection happen?

At 15–20% of production completion, while corrections are still cheap and the line is still running.

Why is final inspection alone not enough?

By final inspection everything is already made. The factory's only options are expensive rework or persuading you to accept an AQL pass.

What does the 50–60% inline check catch?

Consistency drift — where early production was good and later output is not. It is the defect a single final inspection is worst at detecting.

What AQL level is standard?

AQL 2.5 or 1.0 for the final random inspection, agreed in advance based on the product and your defect tolerance.
